THE TV AND CHILDREN.

 

        There are several sources of getting information in the world today. They are called "mass media" in general. Some of them are television, radio, newspapers, and the internet. Out of all these sources television is regarded as the most powerful medium.  We learn about the latest happenings of the world through the TV  The world is changing day by day. The TV affects the behavior of its viewers. There are various programs for children. Educational programs, do you know contests, cartoons, and children's plays are some of them. They are interesting.

        But some programs are not at all suitable for children. There is a public opinion that TV makes children more violent. Violent actions, adult shows, and certain advertisements are harmful to children. Children are always in the habit of imitating others. They select some characters as their heroes and imitate their activities in their real-life too. A child watches the TV not to learn something but to watch or to enjoy an exciting story. When the children are addicted to watching TV they will compel to neglect their famous performance studies too. 

        According to a survey conducted by the Department of mass communication of the University of Kelaniya 75% of the child population watch TV till 10.00 p.m. Apart from that over 82% of the children watch teledramas which are adult-oriented. The survey further reveals that only 25% of children watch programs intended for there. 

        Most of our TV dramas deal with crime. Normal children love adventure and excitement. They are not in a position to understand the difference between the screen world and reality. They think that what they watch are real happenings in society. So children should be taught the difference between the fictitious world and the real world. 

        The responsible authorities should take action to produce more and more programs that are suitable for children. 👆
